Why do deer grow antlers?

Imagine two deer in a forest. They both want to eat from the same bush. Instead of biting each other (ouch!), they push their antlers together. The stronger one gets the food. Nobody dies. That's nature's way of saying "let's compete fairly."

Bitcoin works the same way, but with electricity instead of antlers.

Antlers: Nature's Proof-of-Power

Male deer grow enormous antlers that consume massive metabolic energy. They seem wasteful. They're heavy, they get caught in branches, they require constant resources to maintain. But this "waste" is the entire point.

Antlers are a physical power projection technology. They allow intraspecies competition without lethal harm. Two bucks lock antlers, push against each other, and the weaker one walks away alive. Resources are allocated through physical contest, with no trust, no authority, no central arbiter needed.

The thesis argues Bitcoin's energy expenditure serves the exact same biological function: a non-lethal power competition that establishes resource control.

Physical Power Projection as Evolutionary Strategy

Lowery identifies antlers as a paradigmatic example of what he terms "intraspecies physical power projection technology" (p. 108). The key insight is that antlers evolved specifically to enable conspecific competition without the intraspecies harm that would threaten population viability.

This maps directly to Bitcoin's proof-of-work mechanism: the deliberate expenditure of thermodynamic energy (watts consumed through SHA-256 hash computations) creates a non-lethal physical power competition that establishes resource control consensus (block rewards and transaction ordering) without requiring trust-based hierarchies.

The Bowtie: Security in One Shape

Imagine you see a toy on the ground. The green circle is how much you want it. The amber circle is how hard it would be to take. If it's easy to take and very tempting, someone will grab it!

The bowtie is the thesis's core visual model. The green lobe represents BA, how attractive a resource is to an attacker. The amber lobe represents CA, how much physical power it would cost to take it. The ratio between them determines whether attack is rational.

Lowery's Bowtie Notation (pp. 75-82) formalizes the Benefit-to-Cost Ratio of Attack (BCRA). When BA/CA > 1, attacking is thermodynamically rational. Security means ensuring CA always exceeds BA, a principle that applies from elk territories to Bitcoin mining.

Constantinople refuses cannons

In 1453, a Hungarian engineer named Orban offered the Byzantine Emperor his new weapon: a massive cannon. Emperor Constantine XI declined. Orban then walked across enemy lines and offered the same weapon to Sultan Mehmed II, who happily accepted. The sultan used Orban's cannons to breach the legendary Theodosian Walls, walls that had held for a thousand years, and the Byzantine Empire fell.

The technology was offered to both sides. The one who refused it was destroyed by it.
